What Cleans Grout?

No matter how nice the tile is in your front entryway, kitchen, or bathroom, gross grout lines will detract from its beauty. And there’s no real easy way of cleaning the grout, either. Mops aren’t able to get into those crevices and just dumping store-bought chemicals on the grout could harm the finish of your tiles.

Not all grout and tile scum are created equally. Mold and mildew in the bathroom, ground in dirt in the entryway, and dropped food and drink spills in the kitchen. A light film on your tile floors is relatively easy to clean. But if it’s been a few years, you may need to use a bit of elbow grease.

Grout Cleaning Solutions

If you’re looking for a quick way to spot clean grout, you could try using just hot water and a stiff-bristled brush. There are plenty of grout and tile-specific brushes, but other brushes will work depending on how ingrained the dirt and debris are. Just don’t use wire brushes – you could damage the grout and tile.

If the stains are light, you shouldn’t need much more than that. If you need a little extra cleaning power, fill a spray bottle with warm water and white vinegar and simply spray the mixture on the grout. After five minutes or so, scrub with a brush. Using baking soda, water, and a little dish soap works, too.

Still no luck? Or at least finding it very difficult to get the mess clean? You could graduate to using hydrogen peroxide by itself or mixing it with some baking powder. (Who knew baking powder was such a powerful cleaner?) Oxygen bleach is an option too. If all else fails, there are heavy-duty grout cleaners on the market.

The last two tips we can offer is to clean everything up when you’re done. The most important cleaning tip we can give you? Make sure to clean everything up when you’re done and make sure there’s plenty of ventilation. Bleach and vinegar can make for quite a toxic combination.

No matter what, it’s going to take some work on your part to clean an entire bathroom or kitchen floor. Getting on your hands and knees and scrubbing grout lines is nobody’s idea of a good time – maybe that’s why they get so dirty in the first place!

Those steam cleaners you see in grocery or home improvement stores or one of those tanker truck cleaning companies use entirely too much water. For a standard 1,000 square foot house, the tanker trucks could use close to 100 gallons of water, and leave about 20 percent of it behind.

The Heaven’s Best low-moisture process uses about three gallons of water to clean the same area. Because we use so little water, we can guarantee your carpet will be dry to the touch in an hour or two. No more being locked out of your home playing the waiting game.

Heaven’s Best also performs spot cleaning and repair, upholstery care, window cleaning, and commercial cleaning. Spring’s just around the corner, too!
